Castiglione in Teverina lies between the Volsini Mountains and the River Tiber Valley, in a hilly landscape characterised by badlands, wooded areas and farmland. The terroir is formed by the interplay of Pliocene clays, sands and conglomerates, with volcanic deposits linked to the activity of the Vulsini complex: a complex geological matrix that provides the vineyards with a variety of conditions in terms of drainage, structure and depth. The temperate climate and the aspect of the slopes contribute to the balanced ripening of the grapes, whilst the proximity of Lake Bolsena enriches the area’s environmental landscape.
The winemaking tradition is documented as far back as Etruscan and Roman times and continues through the Middle Ages, maintaining a strong link with the local agricultural culture. Castiglione in Teverina falls within the Orvieto DOC zone, a designation based primarily on the blend of Procanico – corresponding to Trebbiano Toscano – and Grechetto, alongside other authorised white grape varieties. The wines range from dry, off-dry, semi-sweet and sweet styles, right up to the Superiore, Vendemmia Tardiva and Muffa Nobile versions. Alongside the Orvieto whites, there are wines from the Tuscia region made from Procanico, Grechetto, Rossetto and Sangiovese. Contemporary wineries showcase these grapes through meticulous winemaking processes, whilst preserving the techniques and knowledge of the tradition.
