The Val di Magra is a luminous and varied borderland, where the vines follow the course of the River Magra from the plains of Sarzana and Luni towards the hills overlooking the Ligurian Sea, the Apuan Alps and the Apennines. The proximity of the sea brings breezes and a mild climate, whilst the inland area introduces temperature variations and a gradual ripening of the grapes, which is vital for preserving freshness, bouquet and aromatic definition. The soils alternate between alluvial deposits in the lower-lying areas and siliceous and siliceous-clay components on the slopes, with vineyards cultivated across the plain, low hills and slopes, tended according to traditional methods.
The wine-growing profile of the area is linked above all to white wines with a Mediterranean and briny character, with Vermentino taking centre stage alongside Albarola, Trebbiano Toscano, Verdello and Durella. Among the reds and rosés, varieties such as Pollera, Ciliegiolo, Groppello and Sangiovese find their place, capable of expressing fruit, freshness and well-balanced tannins. Rational training systems, such as Guyot and inverted Guyot, and winemaking techniques focused on clarity enhance a historic terroir, rooted in the Lunigiana region and in the memory of the ancient Roman town of Luni.
