The Eastern Riviera dei Fiori covers the area closest to the Gulf of Diano and the Imperia section of the Riviera dei Fiori, where viticulture flourishes between the coast, the short valleys that wind their way inland, and the slopes overlooking the Ligurian Sea. The landscape is characterised by steep slopes, terraces supported by traditional dry-stone walls, and a close interplay between vineyards, olive groves and Mediterranean scrub. The presence of the sea and the protection afforded by the Ligurian Alps contribute to a mild, sunny and moderately breezy climate, with temperate winters and conditions favourable to the gradual ripening of the grapes.
The soils, which are often varied and well-drained, stem from the complex geological structure of western Liguria and comprise rocky, colluvial and alluvial substrates in the valley and coastal areas. This diversity, combined with the various exposures, allows for the production of multifaceted wines that reflect the terroir, characterised by freshness, savouriness and Mediterranean aromas.
Among the most representative grape varieties, Pigato and Vermentino stand out, producing bright, floral and citrus-driven white wines, underpinned by a distinct briny character. Rossese, as produced in the Riviera Ligure di Ponente, yields light, fragrant red wines with crisp fruit, spicy notes and delicate tannins. In the more inland areas, the distinctive character of Ormeasco and Moscatello also comes to the fore, linked to the hills and traditions of the Imperia valleys.
Local viticulture retains an artisanal approach: the steep slopes require manual labour, careful pruning and meticulous management of the terraces. In the cellar, winemaking methods that preserve aromatic integrity, structure and varietal character take precedence. The result is a wine heritage deeply rooted in Liguria’s rural culture, its stone, olive trees and the light of the Mediterranean.
