San Martino della Battaglia lies on the morainic hills south of Lake Garda, in a strip of land between the Benacense amphitheatre and the Garda hinterland. The vineyard landscape features a mix of gentle slopes, soils of glacial origin and limestone soils, which are often rich in rock fragments and well-drained, favouring balanced ripening and a distinct aromatic expression. The climate, tempered by the presence of the lake, offers bright summers, good ventilation and significant daily temperature variations, which help to preserve freshness and aromas.
The local winemaking tradition centres on Tuchì, the historic name of the grape variety now associated with the San Martino della Battaglia appellation and predominantly found in the wines covered by the production regulations. The white wines are characterised by a bright colour, floral and fruity aromas, delicate hints of almond and a pleasant hint of bitterness; alongside the dry wines, there are fortified versions – fuller-bodied, softer and more enveloping – produced by adding fortified must and a period of ageing. The winemaking process enhances the varietal identity through careful fermentation, temperature control and precisely calibrated ageing periods. The memory of the 1859 battle and the rural landscape contribute to making this area a wine-growing region with a strong sense of historical and environmental identity.
