Castorano is situated on the hills overlooking the Tronto Valley, in a sun-drenched wine-growing landscape characterised by gentle slopes, a southerly aspect and a location sheltered from sea winds. The mild climate, influenced by the proximity of the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine mountains, encourages the grapes to ripen gradually, preserving their freshness, aromas and balance.
The soils in the area are predominantly clayey, with sandy, sandy-gravelly and marly components that contribute to the wines’ structure and their distinctive terroir character. In this context, Montepulciano and Sangiovese—the star varieties of the Piceno reds—thrive, alongside Pecorino and Passerina, distinctive white varieties also featured in the Offida and Terre di Offida appellations. Trebbiano and other grape varieties permitted by local regulations are also present.
Production includes versions of Rosso Piceno and Rosso Piceno Superiore, Falerio, Offida Pecorino and Offida Passerina, as well as still wines, sparkling wines and passito wines. Production techniques combine fermentation in stainless steel tanks – often carried out under temperature-controlled conditions – with carefully calibrated maceration and ageing in oak for the more structured wines. Viticulture retains its links with rural tradition, now revitalised by practices focused on sustainability, selective harvesting and the promotion of the diverse hillside plots.
