In the hilly heart of the Piceno region, between the provinces of Ascoli Piceno and Fermo, the Offida area stretches from the coastline to the hills further inland, with vineyards situated at altitudes of approximately 50 to 650 metres. The wine-growing landscape is characterised by undulating terrain, with slopes predominantly facing east and south-east, whilst the valley floors are excluded from the appellation. The deep, well-drained soils derive from Pliocene-Pleistocene strata containing sandy, conglomeratic, clayey and pelitic components; the presence of carbonates and good water-retention capacity help maintain the vines’ balance even during the summer.
The Mediterranean climate, with hot but breezy summers, cool winters and rainfall concentrated between autumn and winter, supports consistent ripening and a significant daily temperature range. The Offida DOCG highlights three regional expressions: Pecorino, Passerina and Rosso da Montepulciano. The white wines are characterised by freshness, savouriness, minerality and length, with floral, citrus and fruity notes; the red offers structure, smoothness and depth, developed through prolonged ageing in oak and in the bottle. The winemaking tradition, which dates back to ancient times, is being revitalised today through espalier training systems, Guyot and spurred cordon pruning methods, and winemaking practices that respect the local identity.
