Cupramontana is situated on a medium-to-high-altitude hill on the right bank of the Esino, in the historic heart of the Castelli di Jesi. The vineyards stretch across undulating slopes, often facing the Adriatic, where the altitude, constant breeze and significant daily temperature variations promote the gradual ripening of the grapes and a distinct aromatic expression. The soils consist of a marl-clay matrix, containing limestone, clay, marl and sandstone: a geological diversity that contributes to the structure, savouriness and mineral character of the wines.
The flagship grape variety is Verdicchio, the star of the wines classified as ‘Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi’, including the Classico, Superiore and Riserva versions. Alongside still white wines, the region produces sparkling wines made using both the Metodo Classico and the Metodo Martinotti, as well as passito wines rooted in local tradition. Winemaking practices emphasise precision, freshness and the potential for ageing, with stainless steel used to preserve the wine’s integrity and tension, and longer ageing periods reserved for the more structured wines. Wine culture is deeply rooted in the community: the Sagra dell’Uva (Grape Festival), established in 1928, and a long history of wine-related initiatives have cemented Cupramontana’s identity as one of the most representative areas for Verdicchio from the Marche region.
