The Ostria Vetere area, corresponding to the hilly territory of Ostra Vetere, is situated in the Misa Valley, within an undulating agricultural landscape that gradually leads from the Adriatic Sea towards the Marche hinterland. The vineyards stretch across well-exposed slopes and ridges, where the breeze promotes balanced ripening and helps to preserve freshness and aromatic integrity. The climate, which is Mediterranean in the hilly areas and influenced by sea breezes and the temperature variations of the hinterland, offers favourable conditions for quality viticulture.
The geological composition of the area is predominantly sedimentary, with peltic-sandy substrates and clay-sandy soils that ensure a good water reserve and impart structure, flavour and depth to the grapes. The signature grape variety is Verdicchio, the star of the wines classified as ‘Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi’, alongside other white grape varieties permitted by regional regulations. The wines of the region are characterised by floral and citrus aromas, a dry palate, a mineral edge and a distinctive, slightly bitter finish. Alongside still wines, the winemaking tradition includes more sophisticated styles, such as sparkling wines and passito wines. The winemaking process often emphasises temperature control, neutral containers and ageing on the lees, whilst the local agricultural history – intertwined with the Roman presence and rural culture – reinforces the bond between wine, landscape and heritage.
