Costigliole d’Asti lies amongst the hills of the Monferrato Astigiano, in a vineyard-covered landscape shaped by ridges, sun-facing slopes and valleys that follow the course of the Tanaro. The climate is temperate-continental, with bright summers, significant daily temperature variations and good air circulation thanks to the hilly terrain: conditions that promote gradual ripening and a pleasant aromatic profile in the grapes.
The geology reflects the ancient marine origin of these hills. Marly clays, grey-blue marl, sands and chalky deposits contribute to complex soils, offering good drainage, water retention and a solid mineral character. Barbera is the region’s flagship grape variety, producing red wines that are intensely coloured, fresh, savoury and well-structured, available in both youthful, fragrant styles and richer, more refined versions. Alongside it, Grignolino, Dolcetto and Freisa are also cultivated, as well as Moscato Bianco, Cortese, Chardonnay and Brachetto, which broaden the range with aromatic, lively, dry, sweet and sparkling expressions.
Local viticulture combines manual care, grape selection and traditional training systems with meticulous winemaking, often carried out in stainless steel to preserve the fruit, with optional periods in oak and longer ageing for the more structured wines. The region’s rural heritage and the culture of family-run wineries complete the oenological identity of Costigliole d’Asti.
