Pomaretto is a small Alpine wine-growing area at the head of the Val Germanasca, where the sun-facing slopes are home to vineyards laid out on ancient stone terraces. The hillside and mountain altitudes, generally ranging from around 600 to 850 metres, together with the valley’s breezes and marked daily temperature variations, encourage a slow and steady ripening of the grapes, preserving their freshness, aromas and expressive finesse.
The vineyard landscape, known locally for its characteristic ‘bari’, reflects a long agricultural tradition characterised by dry stone walls, small ‘ciabot’ huts and plots adapted to the slope. Here, viticulture requires predominantly manual labour, from vine canopy management to harvesting, using training systems such as Guyot and practices that ensure the vines receive natural ventilation.
The area’s flagship wine is the Pinerolese Ramìe, a red wine produced from a heritage of Alpine and local grape varieties, including Avanà, Avarengo and Neretto, alongside other non-aromatic red grape varieties. The grapes produce wines with an elegant, terroir-driven profile, characterised by a ruby colour, fruity and spicy aromas, a dry palate, good freshness and a refined tannic structure. The revival of these historic vineyards keeps a centuries-old tradition alive and enhances the landscape and cultural identity of Pomaretto.
