Lessona is situated in Upper Piedmont, in a hilly landscape at the foot of the Alps, where viticulture benefits from a cool, breezy climate characterised by significant temperature variations between day and night. The area is renowned for its sandy soils of marine origin, formed from ancient Pliocene deposits; these are often poor in nutrients and acidic, promoting effective drainage and a slow ripening of the grapes. This distinctive geological composition contributes to wines of remarkable finesse, characterised by freshness, minerality and aromatic development.
Nebbiolo, locally known as Spanna, is the region’s flagship grape variety and, in Lessona, expresses itself as an elegant, fragrant and long-lived wine, with refined tannins and a progressive structure. In wines from this appellation, it may be blended with Vespolina and Uva Rara, traditional varieties that enrich the profile with spicy, floral and fruity notes. The winemaking process generally enhances the complexity of the terroir through careful maceration and prolonged ageing, often in wood, which helps to integrate the tannins without altering the precision of the fruit. The local winemaking tradition, ancient and deeply rooted in rural culture, thus continues to produce red wines with a strong sense of identity, capable of evolving over time whilst retaining their vigour and harmony.
