Gioia del Colle is situated in the heart of the Eastern Murge, on a hilly plateau characterised by altitudes ranging from 200 to 450 metres, gentle slopes and predominantly south-easterly exposures. The hot, arid climate, with bright summers and rainfall concentrated mainly in the autumn and winter months, promotes balanced ripening of the grapes and helps to preserve their freshness.
The vineyard landscape rests on karstic limestone substrates covered with red, clayey or clay-loam soils, rich in skeletal material, potassium and minerals, but naturally well-drained and low in organic matter. These conditions help to produce wines with a distinct mineral character, underpinned by acidity and personality.
Primitivo is the area’s flagship grape variety, alongside Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera and Aleatico; among the white grapes, Trebbiano Toscano stands out. The appellation encompasses red, rosé and white wines, as well as Primitivo and Aleatico – wines capable of combining structure, aromatic intensity and harmony.
The local winemaking tradition has its roots in ancient Peucezia and is still evident in the vineyards trained using the alberello, controspalliera and tendone systems, in traditional pruning methods and in the characteristic dry-stone walls. Winemaking follows established local practices, now refined by oenological innovation.
