Arzachena is one of the most distinctive areas for wine-growing in the Gallura region, where the coastal and hilly landscape blends with a long agricultural tradition. The vineyards are situated on predominantly granitic soils, often covered with coarse sand and rich in rock fragments, which promote drainage and encourage deep root growth. The erosive action of time releases mineral elements from the granite, contributing to the wines’ distinctive savoury character and clarity.
The Mediterranean climate, characterised by mild winters, strong sunshine, rainfall concentrated in the cooler months and constant breezes, creates conditions favourable to the health of the grapes and balanced ripening. The temperature variations between day and night enhance the development of aromas and preserve freshness.
The flagship grape variety is Vermentino, the basis of the Vermentino di Gallura DOCG, produced in young, ‘Superiore’, sparkling, semi-sparkling, passito and late-harvest styles. Alongside it are Cannonau, Bovale, Carignano and Pascali di Cagliari. Local winemaking practices emphasise hand-harvesting, gentle pressing and temperature-controlled fermentation; for the more structured wines, ageing on the lees is common. The result is bright, fragrant, fresh wines with a distinctive mineral finish.
