Salina embodies one of the Aeolian Islands’ most distinctive wine-growing identities, thanks to a landscape of volcanic origin shaped by two main hills and the fertile Valdichiesa valley. The vineyards are set in a bright, breezy environment, influenced by the sea, with volcanic and sandy soils that promote balanced ripening and distinct aromatic character. The signature variety is Malvasia delle Lipari, complemented by Corinto Nero, a grape variety traditionally used in the appellation’s sweet wines as well. On Salina, Malvasia is characterised by floral and fruity aromas, with hints of citrus, apricot and honey, and a pleasant savoury note, expressed in dry white, passito and fortified versions. The production of passito wine preserves an ancient technique that is central to the region’s identity: the grapes, harvested by hand, are laid out on racks and left to dry in the sun, concentrating sugars and aromas before vinification. The tradition of Malvasia has been documented on the island for centuries and has helped to shape Salina’s agricultural culture, which is now reinterpreted through wines that combine aromatic intensity, freshness and Mediterranean character.
