Limarsi refers to the south-eastern part of Pantelleria, near the coast and Punta Limarsi, where the volcanic landscape meets the Strait of Sicily. The area features volcanic soil, rugged terrain and slopes that are in some places very steep, shaped by volcanic activity and the action of the wind and the sea. The climate is typically Mediterranean and sub-Mediterranean: sunny, dry and breezy – conditions that encourage the concentrated ripening of the grapes and help to preserve their aromatic balance.
Local viticulture is closely linked to the presence of Zibibbo – the Pantelleria name for Moscato d’Alessandria – which is traditionally trained in the characteristic low bush style. The vines, often planted in small terraced plots and protected by dry-stone walls made of lava rock, form an integral part of an agricultural landscape shaped over time with care and craftsmanship. The training system of the vines helps to shield the bunches from the wind and make the most of the soil’s resources.
From this winemaking heritage spring the main expressions of the Pantelleria DOC: aromatic white wines, Moscatos, sweet Zibibbo and Passito wines, some of which are produced by drying the grapes. In Limarsi, the mineral and maritime character of the terroir combines with the sun-kissed richness of the Zibibbo, giving rise to intense, Mediterranean wines deeply rooted in the island’s agricultural culture.
