Nestled between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Apennine mountain range, the Apuan Alps form one of the most distinctive wine-growing landscapes in north-western Tuscany. The vine thrives mainly in the hilly and foothill areas surrounding the massif, where steep slopes, terraces supported by dry stone walls and small plots form an agricultural mosaic with a strong sense of identity.
The climate is influenced by the proximity of the sea and the protection offered by the mountains: sea breezes temper the temperatures, whilst the altitude and daily temperature variations encourage gradual ripening and help preserve the fruit’s freshness. Rainfall, fuelled by the mountain range’s unique position in relation to the humid Tyrrhenian air currents, contributes to the landscape’s rich vegetation, making exposure, drainage and canopy management essential.
The geology is extremely varied. Marble, limestone, schist, sandstone and metamorphic rocks alternate across a landscape shaped by karst phenomena and profound tectonic shifts. In the hillside vineyards, the presence of rock fragments and the variable texture of the soils promote good drainage and lend the wines dynamic, savoury and terroir-driven profiles.
The iconic grape variety of the Apuan hills is Vermentino, the star of bright, fragrant and maritime-style whites, often paired with Albarola and Malvasia del Candia. Local tradition also includes Sangiovese, the basis for reds and rosés, alongside varieties of particular historical interest such as Vermentino Nero and Barsaglina, also known as Massaretta. The Candia dei Colli Apuani DOC expresses this variety through white wines, sparkling wines, late-harvest wines, Vin Santo, reds and rosés.
Viticulture in the Apuan region retains an artisanal character: manual harvesting, careful tending of the terraces, naturally low yields on the slopes, and winemaking methods designed to preserve the aromatic integrity, acidity and distinctive character of the grape varieties. The result is a range of wines that successfully blend Mediterranean character, mountain freshness and a sense of rural heritage.
