Castellina in Chianti is situated in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, on the hills of the Siena area between the Val d’Elsa, the Val di Pesa and the Arbia valley. The vineyard landscape stretches across well-exposed ridges and slopes, with the village situated at an altitude of approximately 578 metres and the vineyards spread across a mosaic of micro-environments. The altitude, ventilation and significant daily temperature variations promote a slow and steady ripening of the grapes, preserving their freshness and aromatic finesse. The soils alternate between alberese, galestro, sandstone and calcareous-marly components, offering varying conditions in terms of depth, drainage and mineral content.
Sangiovese is the dominant grape variety and may be vinified as a single variety or blended with traditional varieties such as Canaiolo, Colorino, Ciliegiolo and Malvasia Nera, as well as certain authorised international grape varieties. The Chianti Classico wines from Castellina are characterised by aromas of cherry, blackberry and violet, with hints of spice, well-defined tannins, lively acidity and a pleasant savoury character. Vineyard management prioritises low yields, careful canopy management and staggered harvesting based on altitude and exposure. In the cellar, traditional fermentation and ageing in wood, concrete or steel accompany the wine’s development without masking the identity of the terroir. The local winemaking history is deeply rooted in the long tradition of Chianti and its ancient rural culture.
