Portoferraio boasts one of the most characteristic wine-growing landscapes on the Island of Elba, stretching from the bay of the gulf to the coastal hills and the rural areas of Schiopparello, San Giovanni and Acquabona. The Mediterranean climate, mild in winter and bright and dry in summer, is moderated by the presence of the sea and constant breezes, factors which promote balanced ripening of the grapes and good aromatic concentration. The territory features a complex geological structure, with soils derived from clay, limestone, alluvial deposits and mineral-rich subsoils, which impart savoury, Mediterranean characteristics and a pleasant depth to the wines.
Local tradition is reflected in the grape varieties that have historically adapted to the island’s environment: Sangiovese, Ansonica, Vermentino, Tuscan Trebbiano, Moscato and Aleatico. The Elba appellation encompasses red, rosé, white, sparkling and passito wines, produced using a combination of modern winemaking techniques and traditional practices such as grape drying and extended ageing. Aleatico Passito dell’Elba DOCG represents one of the historic expressions of Portoferraio’s winemaking culture, whilst the white wines made from Ansonica and Vermentino highlight freshness, floral aromas and a maritime character. The vineyards also preserve the legacy of the ‘alberello’ training system, a method linked to the island’s agricultural history and the vine’s ability to adapt to sunny, breezy soils.
