Montemerano is situated on a hill in the Maremma hinterland, at an altitude of around 300 metres, amidst the rolling hills of the Albegna Valley. This location fosters an interesting balance between light, ventilation and temperature, with dry, sunny summers, generally mild winters and a significant temperature range between day and night. The area features a significant amount of travertine, which outcrops between Montemerano and Saturnia, alongside hilly soils that provide good drainage and a variety of agronomic responses.
Local viticulture forms part of the wider context of the Tuscan Maremma and focuses primarily on Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Alicante, Vermentino, Trebbiano Toscano and international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. This yields Mediterranean reds that are fruity and well-structured, often aged in stainless steel or oak to preserve their clarity and depth, as well as savoury and fragrant whites, in which Vermentino expresses freshness and character. The village’s rural character, its connection to olive groves, woods and traditional crops, and the presence of small-scale artisanal producers all contribute to defining a distinctive terroir, where careful winemaking practices complement the natural identity of the landscape.
