Sant’Angelo in Colle occupies a prominent position in the southern part of Montalcino, set amongst an open, sun-drenched hilly landscape characterised by favourable aspect and constant breezes. The proximity of Monte Amiata helps to protect the area from the most severe weather disturbances, whilst the breezes from the Val d’Orcia and the Mediterranean influence promote the even ripening of the grapes, preserving their balance and freshness.
The soils in the area consist of Pliocene sands, often mixed with clay and limestone, offering good drainage and a structure capable of sustaining the vines during the driest periods of summer. In this context, Sangiovese – locally identified as the Brunello clone – finds ideal conditions to express intensity, refined tannins and aromatic depth. The Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino wines are characterised by their rich fruitiness, spicy notes, mineral character and a natural propensity for ageing.
The winemaking tradition blends seamlessly with the historic identity of the medieval village, perched atop the hill. In the vineyard, pruning, canopy management and bunch thinning are key; in the cellar, careful fermentation and precisely controlled ageing accompany the slow maturation of the Sangiovese, enhancing its terroir expression and longevity.
