Ponte San Giovanni occupies a strategic position within the wine-growing landscape of the Umbrian Valley, on the southern edge of the Perugia area and close to the course of the River Tiber, which marks the boundary with the Torgiano area. The relatively low altitude, around 190 metres, and the influence of the river plain result in milder conditions than in the surrounding hills, with sunny summers, good ventilation and marked temperature variations between day and night. The soils, shaped by the dynamics of the River Tiber, consist of a mixture of fine sand, clay and alluvial deposits: soils capable of retaining water, supporting steady ripening and producing wines characterised by balance and a pleasant freshness.
In the local wine-growing context and on the immediately neighbouring hills, the main varieties cultivated are Sangiovese, Grechetto, Trebbiano Toscano, Canaiolo and international varieties, produced as fragrant whites, delicate rosés and well-structured reds. Production techniques emphasise temperature control, carefully calibrated maceration and, for the finest wines, ageing in oak or in the bottle. The proximity to Torgiano further enriches the area’s cultural heritage, where the winemaking tradition is intertwined with Etruscan history, the presence of the River Tiber and a deeply rooted agricultural heritage.
