Altura Vigneto
Altura Vigneto is a wine producer based on the island of Giglio, in the Tuscan Archipelago, whose winemaking is deeply rooted in the island’s and the Mediterranean’s traditions. The project began in 1999 with the restoration of abandoned vineyards and dry-stone terraces, reviving an agricultural tradition that has ancient roots on the island. Here, the vines grow in a harsh yet sun-drenched environment, exposed to the influence of the sea, with drought, wind, sun and salt spray shaping the character of the grapes.
The soil conditions are equally distinctive: sandy, acidic soils, rich in trace elements, criss-crossed by rocks and crevices into which the roots reach deep. Ansonaco, the traditional local name for Ansonica, is the grape variety most closely associated with Giglio, alongside other varieties that have historically been present in the island’s vineyards and are preserved through field selections. Agronomic management prioritises manual labour, grass cover, natural fertilisation and a minimalist approach to vine protection, without the use of herbicides or chemical fertilisers.
In the winery, the philosophy remains consistent with that of the vineyard: spontaneous fermentation, the use of stainless steel, minimal intervention and ageing methods that allow the wine to evolve naturally. The result is a deeply terroir-driven style, characterised by a briny energy, structure, body and a recognisable Mediterranean tension. Altura Vigneto interprets Giglio as a living agricultural landscape, where restoration, biodiversity and local identity become an integral part of the wine’s expression.
