Torre dei Passeri occupies a prominent position in the upper Pescara Valley, set amidst an open, breezy hilly landscape, framed by the Maiella and Gran Sasso mountain ranges. The terroir is shaped by the combination of sedimentary soils, rich in rock fragments and minerals, and a microclimate characterised by bright days, mountain breezes and marked temperature variations between day and night. These conditions favour slow and complete ripening, preserving freshness, aromatic intensity and structure.
The flagship grape variety is Montepulciano, historically also known as Montepulciano di Torre de’ Passeri: a variety with roots stretching back over two centuries, capable of producing deep, savoury, spicy red wines underpinned by ripe tannins. The same grape produces a Cerasuolo that is bright in colour, fragrant and lively, whilst Trebbiano Abruzzese and other white grape varieties contribute to a more varied production, focused on balance and territorial identity.
The local winemaking tradition preserves the use of the Abruzzese pergola system, alongside espalier training in new plantings, with pruning methods and planting densities suited to managing the hillside vineyards. In the cellar, meticulous winemaking, carefully controlled maceration and ageing in stainless steel or wood accompany the wines’ development, enhancing the recognisable mineral character and the long winemaking history of the Causauri area.
