Lappano is situated on the western slopes of the Sila, on high ground overlooking the Crati Valley, where viticulture benefits from the combination of Mediterranean influences and cooler air currents from the Sila plateau. The hilly landscape, characterised by sunny exposures and constant breezes, promotes the gradual ripening of the grapes and helps to preserve their aromatic integrity and freshness.
The loamy-sandy soils, enriched with silt and clay, offer a good balance between drainage, water availability and the capacity to support plant growth. It is in this environment that Calabrian red grape varieties, such as Magliocco, Gaglioppo and Greco Nero, find their fullest expression, alongside white varieties such as Greco Bianco, Pecorello, Mantonico and Malvasia. The region’s wines are characterised by aromas of ripe fruit, floral and spicy notes, a balanced structure and a fresh quality linked to the hilly microclimate.
Local wines include intense, Mediterranean-style reds, fragrant rosés and whites with good acidity, produced through careful winemaking, often in stainless steel, with occasional ageing in wood to enhance complexity and harmony. The tradition of the grape harvest and the community’s connection to wine remain alive in the celebrations dedicated to the grapes, a tangible expression of Lappano’s agricultural identity.
