Paternopoli is situated in one of the most suitable hilly areas of the Irpinia wine-growing region, in the southern part of the Taurasi appellation. The landscape is characterised by slopes and hills reaching around 500 metres in height, with vineyards that are well-exposed, well-ventilated and nestled amongst woods, olive groves and valleys through which the rivers Calore and Fredane flow. The continental climate, characterised by cold winters, sunny summers and marked temperature variations between day and night, favours slow and gradual ripening, preserving freshness, aromas and polyphenolic richness.
The local geology consists mainly of polygenic conglomerates, interspersed with sandy and sandy-clay layers, with soils that may contain a clay-limestone component. This variety contributes to the creation of deep, savoury wines with a structured profile. Aglianico is the region’s flagship grape variety and finds ideal conditions here to express intensity, dense tannins, acidity and spicy, floral and balsamic notes. Alongside the reds Taurasi and Irpinia Campi Taurasini, local viticulture also makes the most of Fiano, Greco, Coda di Volpe and other traditional varieties.
Vineyard management practices aim to naturally limit yields, maintain a balanced canopy and allow the grapes to ripen, often resulting in late harvests. Hand-picking, selection of the bunches, careful maceration and ageing in stainless steel, oak or bottle all contribute to long-lived and harmonious expressions of the terroir.
