The Roccamonfina and Foce del Garigliano area lies in the north-western part of the province of Caserta, between the Roccamonfina volcanic massif, the Garigliano floodplain and the limestone-dolomite foothills of the Massico and Cesima mountains. It is a varied landscape, featuring gently sloping hills, fertile plains and slopes descending towards the Tyrrhenian coast, set amidst a landscape protected by chestnut woods, olive groves and vineyards.
The terroir is strongly influenced by its volcanic origins. The eruptions of Roccamonfina deposited pyroclastic material, lava and Campanian ignimbrite, forming deep, well-drained soils rich in minerals, often with a sub-acidic reaction. In the areas closest to the Garigliano, one also finds alluvial soils that are loam-clay, sandy-silty and rich in humus, whilst the areas around Monte Massico retain a calcareous matrix. This variety of soil types contributes to a marked diversity of oenological expressions.
The climate is generally temperate, sunny and breezy, with rainfall concentrated mainly in the autumn and winter months. The predominantly south-east and south-west-facing slopes favour good ripening of the grapes, whilst the temperature variations associated with the hillside altitudes help to preserve freshness and aromatic definition.
Local viticulture focuses on Campania varieties such as Aglianico, Coda di Volpe, Falanghina, Fiano, Greco, Piedirosso, Primitivo and Sciascinoso. The appellation includes white, red and rosé wines, as well as sparkling, passito and novello wines. The whites are characterised by floral aromas and a fresh, lively character; the reds express structure, savoury notes and balanced tannins; the rosés focus on fragrance and immediacy. Modern espalier vineyards, trained using the Guyot or spurred cordon methods, are complemented by winemaking practices designed to preserve varietal identity. The winemaking tradition, documented as far back as Roman times and also linked to the ancient Ager Falernus, thus continues to engage with a contemporary interpretation of the territory.
