Sant’Agata dei Goti is a hilly wine-growing area in the Benevento Sannio region, situated within the municipal boundaries and stretching between the Isclero valleys and the slopes of Mount Taburno. The vineyard landscape alternates between terraces, slopes and well-exposed hills, offering conditions favourable to the balanced ripening of the grapes: sunny summers, breezes from the Apennines and a touch of coolness that enhances the aromas and acidity.
The vineyards designated for this appellation are situated mainly on medium-textured clay, limestone and tuff soils, on hillsides or in foothill areas. The exclusion of the more humid valley floors, together with the adoption of traditional training systems and the ban on forced ripening practices, emphasises the link between viticulture, the environment and the region’s distinctive character.
The Sant’Agata dei Goti DOC, recognised in 1993, showcases a deeply Campanian ampelographic heritage: Falanghina and Greco for the whites, Aglianico and Piedirosso for the reds, as well as white, red and rosé wines produced from a blend of local grape varieties. The wines generally exhibit distinct aromas, a well-balanced structure and a pleasant sense of terroir. Tradition is revitalised through meticulous winemaking, ageing in wood for the more structured wines, and the use of ancient cellars carved into the tuff, which are naturally suited to ageing.
