Faedis is situated in a hilly area of the Colli Orientali del Friuli, where vineyards, woods and watercourses combine to form a varied landscape that is ideal for viticulture. The hillside exposures, the protection afforded by the Julian Pre-Alps from the coldest winds, and the moderating influence of the Adriatic Sea combine to create a breezy climate, ensuring consistent ripening and the preservation of aromatic freshness.
The geological structure belongs to the Eocene flysch, formed by alternating layers of marl and sandstone known locally as ‘ponca’. These soils are rich in minerals, offering good drainage, depth and a distinctive savoury character, which is particularly evident in the best-exposed hillside plots. The topography of the slopes favours careful cultivation, erosion management and vineyard layouts often organised in accordance with the tradition of hillside viticulture.
The ampelographic heritage includes Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia, Verduzzo Friulano and Picolit, alongside red grape varieties such as Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Schioppettino, Pignolo and Tazzelenghe. Of particular note is Refosco di Faedis, which has been linked to local history for centuries and is now recognised as a defining expression of the territory’s identity. The wines are produced from selective harvests, often carried out by hand, and through winemaking processes that respect the individual grape varieties, with ageing techniques designed to enhance their structure, aromas and longevity. The presence of ancient Picolit and Refosco vineyards bears witness to a deeply rooted and still vibrant winemaking tradition.
