Capriva del Friuli occupies a prominent position within the Collio wine-growing landscape, in a hilly area where the vines are nestled amongst woods, meadows and well-exposed slopes. The terroir is characterised by ponca, a flysch of Eocene origin consisting of stratified marl and sandstone; these mineral, well-drained soils promote balanced vine growth and good concentration in the grapes. The climate features hot but not stifling summers, cold winters and evenly distributed rainfall – conditions that allow for gradual ripening and preserve freshness and aromas.
Capriva’s viticultural character is expressed above all in the production of white wines, with Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon, Malvasia Istriana, Riesling and Picolit among the most representative varieties. The region’s wines combine structure, aromatic finesse, savouriness and a lively acidity; alongside varietal wines, there is also Collio Bianco and wines capable of evolving through ageing. Red grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso are also grown.
Local tradition combines hillside viticulture practices, grape selection and winemaking methods that respect the varietal identity, with the option of ageing in wood and the production of ‘Riserva’ wines as permitted by the Collio designation, recognised since 1968.
