Civitella d’Agliano is a wine-growing area in the Tuscia region of Viterbo, characterised by a luminous, hilly landscape overlooking the upper Tiber valley and marked by the striking presence of badlands. Here, the vine thrives in a particularly expressive environment: the volcanic soils, containing tuff, pumice and clay components, promote good drainage, aromatic finesse and a natural savoury character in the wines. The temperate hillside climate, breezy and with moderate summer dryness, facilitates gradual ripening, which helps to preserve the fruit’s freshness and clarity.
Grechetto is the grape variety most closely associated with the area, alongside Malvasia, Trebbiano, Grechetto Rosso, Sangiovese and Chardonnay, in keeping with a broad and deeply-rooted viticultural tradition. The white wines of Civitella d’Agliano are characterised by fruity aromas, tension and savouriness; the rosés express delicacy and harmony, whilst the reds display ruby hues, a fruity character and a well-balanced palate. The local wine-growing history has its roots in Etruria and continues through the agricultural traditions of the Roman and medieval periods. Vineyard and winery practices, based on traditional training systems and winemaking methods, now bring out the best in a terroir that combines volcanic energy, the elegance of the hills and a strong sense of place.
