Ranzo is a wine-growing area in the upper Arroscia Valley, in the Imperia hinterland, where the presence of the Ligurian Alps interacts with Mediterranean influences. The vineyards are mainly situated on the hillsides and terraces supported by the characteristic stone walls, within a varied landscape that alternates between vineyards, olive groves, woods and valleys. The southerly exposures encourage the grapes to ripen fully, whilst the altitude and the temperature variations between day and night help to preserve freshness, aromas and a lively palate.
The signature grape variety is Pigato, the star of the Riviera Ligure di Ponente DOC, including within the Riviera dei Fiori sub-zone. In this setting, it produces white wines with an intense, Mediterranean profile, featuring floral, fruity and herbaceous notes, a pleasant structure, savoury balance and a characteristic almond-like finish. Alongside Pigato, Vermentino, Rossese and Ormeasco also find their place, enriching the local wine heritage with white and red wines rooted in Ligurian tradition.
Winegrowing in Ranzo retains an artisanal character: manual harvesting, meticulous care of the terraced plots and winemaking methods designed to preserve the aromas and identity of the grapes. The agricultural history of the valley – an ancient route linking the coast and the mountains – thus lives on in the wines and the traditions of the winegrowers.
