The Riviera delle Palme stretches along the Savona coastline between Varazze and Andora, where the vineyard landscape is shaped by the meeting of the Ligurian Sea, the hills immediately behind it and the valleys that wind their way up towards the Ligurian Alps. The proximity of the sea helps to maintain mild temperatures and promote good ventilation, whilst the hills protect the vineyards from the colder northerly winds. The result is a bright, dry environment characterised by numerous microclimates, particularly suited to the cultivation of Mediterranean grape varieties.
The vineyards are mainly situated on hillsides and terraces supported by dry stone walls, as well as in the more open areas of the Albenga and Finale regions. The soils are varied: in the areas near Albenga, looser, warmer soils predominate, whilst towards the Arroscia Valley, limestone substrates and materials derived from the weathering of ancient conglomerates are found. In the Finalese area, the Manie karst plateau is characterised by iron-rich red soils, which lend the wines energy and definition.
The area’s signature grape variety is Pigato, a dry white wine with a savoury profile, fruity and floral aromas, and a characteristic bitter finish. Alongside it, Vermentino, Lumassina, Rossese and Granaccia find their place, broadening the range with fresh, aromatic, rosé and red wines of great character. The Riviera Ligure di Ponente and Colline Savonesi appellations showcase these varieties through single-varietal wines and terroir-driven expressions.
Viticulture retains a strong connection to manual labour, which is essential on the terraced slopes and in the small hillside plots. Selective harvesting, winemaking techniques focused on freshness and, for the reds, carefully controlled maceration allow the maritime, Mediterranean and mineral characteristics of a wine-growing coastline deeply integrated into the Ligurian landscape to shine through.
