Ortovero is situated in the heart of the Arroscia Valley, in the hinterland of the Albenga area, within a wine-growing landscape where the influence of the Ligurian Sea meets the shelter of the hills. The mild climate, cooled by sea breezes and characterised by abundant sunshine, promotes the balanced ripening of the grapes, preserving their aromas and savoury notes. The vineyards are planted on the ‘Ortovero clays’, Pliocene soils of a clay-sandy composition, flanked in some areas by calcareous marl and iron-rich clays: a variety of soil types that helps to define the different nuances in the wines.
The flagship grape variety is Pigato, historically linked to the area and a staple of local tradition since the nineteenth century. Alongside it are Vermentino, Rossese, Granaccia and other varieties typical of western Liguria’s viticulture, produced under the Riviera Ligure di Ponente and Colline Savonesi appellations. The white wines generally express notes of peach, citrus, flowers and Mediterranean herbs, underpinned by freshness and savouriness; the reds combine finesse, fragrance and a spicy character. Hand-harvesting, soft pressing, temperature-controlled fermentation and ageing in stainless steel are widespread practices designed to enhance aromatic precision and territorial identity. Wine-growing cooperatives and festivals dedicated to Pigato wine keep alive the link between the vineyard, the community and agricultural culture.
