Sassella is the historic western sub-zone of Valtellina Superiore, situated between Castione Andevenno and the outskirts of Sondrio, on the Rhaetian side of the valley. The vineyard landscape stretches across south-facing terraced slopes, at altitudes of between approximately 270 and 600 metres, where dry stone walls follow the contours of the mountainside and blend in with outcrops of bedrock. The name itself evokes the stony nature of the area, a distinctive feature of a terroir characterised by mineral-rich, well-drained soils with a high proportion of stone.
The favourable aspect, alpine protection and significant temperature variations between day and night create ideal conditions for the slow and complete ripening of the grapes. The main grape variety is Nebbiolo, locally known as Chiavennasca, supplemented, within permitted limits, by traditional red varieties such as Pignola, Rossola and Brugnola. Viticulture requires meticulous manual work, from managing the terraces to the harvest, which is often carried out on a plot-by-plot basis.
Sassella’s wines are distinguished by their structure, freshness and elegant tannic texture, with intense aromas that evolve over time into floral, spicy and balsamic notes. Traditional winemaking and extended ageing enhance the wines’ depth, harmony and longevity, precisely expressing the alpine character of this part of the Valtellina.
