Media Valtellina stretches between Sondrio and Tirano along the Rhaetian side of the valley, where vineyards occupy the best-exposed slopes and blend with an alpine landscape shaped by human activity over the centuries. The vineyards face south and benefit from abundant sunshine, the protection offered by the mountains and the breezes rising from nearby Lake Como. This results in a relatively temperate microclimate, with dry summers and significant temperature variations between day and night – ideal conditions for the slow and steady ripening of the grapes.
The geological character of the area is evident in the poor, well-drained soils rich in minerals, formed from rocky substrates, glacial deposits and alluvial materials. The terraces, supported by dry stone walls, allow vines to be cultivated on steep, fragmented slopes: each plot retains a unique combination of aspect, altitude, gradient and soil composition.
The undisputed star is Chiavennasca, the local name for Nebbiolo, a grape variety that finds a refined, fragrant and long-lived Alpine expression here. Alongside it, depending on the various appellations and the winery’s own interpretations, traditional red grape varieties such as Pignola Valtellinese, Rossola and Brugnola may also feature. The most representative wines include Rosso di Valtellina, Valtellina Superiore and Sforzato di Valtellina, all characterised by freshness, a well-structured tannic profile, aromatic intensity and a distinct sense of place.
Production emphasises hand-harvesting – essential on the terraced slopes – red wine vinification, and ageing periods in wood and in the bottle. For Sforzato, a portion of the grapes undergoes natural drying in the drying rooms, a traditional technique that concentrates aromas and structure. The winemaking history of Media Valtellina is thus reflected in wines that combine elegance, alpine vigour and a deep connection to the landscape.
