Canelli is situated in the heart of the Monferrato Astigiano hills, within a wine-growing landscape recognised by UNESCO for the long-standing relationship between the environment, the vineyards and the culture of wine. The area stretches between the Belbo valley and the hills linking Monferrato and the Langhe, featuring slopes, hillocks and sunny plateaus, generally at altitudes of between 165 and 500 metres. The temperate-continental climate features hot summers, cold winters and good hilltop ventilation, which is particularly favourable for the ripening of the grapes and the preservation of acidity.
The soils, of marine sedimentary origin, are characterised by calcareous marl, sandstone and clay, often stratified and not very fertile: conditions that limit the vigour of the vines and promote aromatic concentration. The signature grape variety is Moscato Bianco, traditionally grown on espalier trellises using the Guyot pruning method, on slopes selected for their aspect and drainage. Manual harvesting and the care of the vineyards on steep slopes reflect agricultural expertise handed down through the generations.
The local winemaking tradition includes sweet, fresh and sometimes lively aromatic wines, as well as more complex versions produced through prolonged ageing. Controlled fermentation and cold arrest help to preserve the aromatic profile, freshness and natural liveliness of Moscato Bianco.
