Fontanelle is situated within the wine-growing landscape of the Eastern Murge, in a hilly area of Apulia characterised by limestone subsoils, red earth and karst formations. The natural drainage of the soils, the presence of exposed rock and the limited availability of surface water favour a style of viticulture that produces crisp, savoury and well-defined wines. The warm, sunny Mediterranean climate alternates between dry summers and rainfall concentrated in the autumn and winter months; the breeze and daily temperature variations help to preserve the freshness and aromatic profile of the grapes.
Fontanelle’s winemaking focus centres primarily on the white grape varieties of the Murgia region, such as Verdeca and Bianco d’Alessano, alongside red varieties common in central and southern Puglia, including Primitivo and Negroamaro. This yields fragrant, mineral-driven white wines; intense yet balanced reds; luminous rosés; and sparkling wines produced through natural secondary fermentation. There is also no shortage of more artisanal expressions of the terroir, with skin maceration and winemaking techniques designed to enhance structure, savoury complexity and varietal character. The rural tradition, linked to farmsteads, dry stone walls and mixed cropping, completes the identity of a district where wine is born from the interplay of limestone, Mediterranean light and agricultural culture.
