Castel del Monte is one of the most recognisable wine-growing areas in the north-western Murgia, situated between the Alta Murgia and the hills overlooking the Adriatic. The vineyard landscape stretches across plateaus, ridges and valleys of karst origin, often at high altitudes, where the sub-Mediterranean climate combines hot, dry summers with cool winters and good ventilation. The temperature variations between day and night encourage gradual ripening and help to preserve freshness and aromatic integrity.
The geological structure is dominated by compact Cretaceous limestone, with soils that are generally shallow, stony and rich in mineral content, capable of supporting intensive viticulture and imparting energy and definition to the wines. The appellation showcases a rich ampelographic heritage: Nero di Troia, Bombino Nero, Bombino Bianco, Pampanuto, Aglianico, Montepulciano, Chardonnay and Sauvignon reflect the varying conditions of aspect and altitude. This yields fragrant, luminous white wines; delicate, aromatic rosés; structured, long-lived reds; as well as semi-sparkling and sparkling wines. Local tradition, combined with rational pruning, targeted harvesting and winemaking methods focused on preserving the fruit’s character, maintains a strong link between agricultural practices, rural identity and the Murgia landscape.
