San Leonardo is a wine-growing village in Upper Gallura, within the municipality of Calangianus, amongst the valleys stretching towards Luras and Lake Liscia. The landscape alternates between vineyards, cork oak woods and granite outcrops, in a hilly environment generally situated below 500 metres in altitude. The soils, formed by the weathering of granite, are sandy, well-drained and rich in potassium: characteristics that promote effective drainage and balanced ripening of the grapes.
The climate is Mediterranean, sunny and breezy, with constant breezes that help to preserve freshness and aromatic integrity. The main grape variety is Vermentino, the star of the Vermentino di Gallura DOCG, which here expresses floral aromas, citrus notes, hints of Mediterranean herbs and a distinctive savoury, mineral character. The appellation includes still wines, Superiore, semi-sparkling, sparkling, passito and late-harvest wines.
Local viticulture emphasises low yields per vine, careful attention to ripening times and measured interventions in the vineyard, whilst in the winery, winemaking techniques are employed to preserve the varietal and territorial character. San Leonardo thus represents one of the most distinctive expressions of the Gallura wine-growing landscape, where granite, wind and rural culture define wines that are luminous, intense and deeply Mediterranean.
