Atzara is situated in the heart of Mandrolisai, on the western slopes of Gennargentu, amidst a hilly landscape characterised by vineyards, woodland and traditional crops. The wine-growing area extends mainly across well-exposed plateaus and slopes, where the altitude, sunlight and daily temperature variations promote the gradual ripening of the grapes and help preserve their acidity. The cool, relatively continental climate, with average annual temperatures of around 10 °C, helps to produce wines characterised by structure, balance and aromatic intensity.
The soils derive largely from the weathering of granite and porphyry, featuring brown soils, lithosols and a sandy matrix, generally acidic or sub-acidic. These conditions encourage deep root growth in the vines and complement the richness of the fruit with a savoury and dynamic texture. The local tradition centres on the native grape varieties Bovale Sardo, Cannonau and Monica, blended together in the characteristic Mandrolisai blend, alongside red and rosé wines that reflect the region’s identity.
In Atzara, historic vineyards trained using the alberello method still survive, bearing witness to an ancient viticultural tradition closely linked to the rural landscape. Contemporary practices combine this rural heritage with more precise winemaking techniques, capable of enhancing colour, Mediterranean aromas, flavour intensity and ageing potential.
