Giba perfectly epitomises the wine-growing landscape of southern Sulcis, set in a fertile plain surrounded by low hills and looking out towards the Sant’Antioco lagoon and the Gulf of Palmas. The proximity of the sea, exposure to the winds – particularly the mistral – and a hot, dry Mediterranean climate promote the even ripening of the grapes, preserving their balance, aromas and freshness.
The soil structure is linked to the geological complexity of the plain: ancient and recent alluvial deposits predominate, alongside sandy, clayey and calcareous substrates, as well as substrates of volcanic origin in the hilly areas. This variety helps to regulate the vigour, drainage and root depth of the vines, bringing out the mineral and briny nuances in the wines.
The signature grape variety is Carignano, often trained using the alberello method and, in some vineyards, still grown ungrafted. This yields structured, intense and Mediterranean reds, as well as lighter, more luminous rosés, all falling under the Carignano del Sulcis DOC. Alongside it, Vermentino produces aromatic, fresh and savoury whites, underpinned by natural acidity. Hand-harvesting, grape selection, respectful winemaking techniques and various forms of ageing enhance the character of the terroir, keeping alive the dialogue between agricultural tradition and contemporary winemaking sensibilities.
