Biancavilla lies on the south-western slope of Mount Etna, in a wine-growing landscape shaped by the volcano’s activity and the presence of ancient lava flows. The vineyards are planted on basalt-derived soils, containing sandy and ash-like components, rich in minerals and characterised by particularly effective natural drainage. The altitude, open exposures and distance from the sea contribute to a bright, dry and breezy climate, with significant temperature variations between day and night, which favour slow ripening and the preservation of freshness.
Local viticulture focuses primarily on the native grape varieties of Etna. Nerello Mascalese is the benchmark for red wines, often complemented by Nerello Cappuccio, whilst Carricante, Catarratto and Minnella Bianca enrich the range of white grape varieties. Alongside modern spurred cordon training systems, the traditional alberello training method still survives, being particularly well-suited to the terraced volcanic soils and the slopes of the region.
The wines produced in Biancavilla encompass the Etna Rosso, Etna Bianco, Etna Rosato and Etna Spumante styles, characterised by taut, mineral and savoury profiles. The lava soil, the breeze and the patient work in the vineyard give the wines a distinct territorial identity, combining elegance, energy and depth.
