The Alta Maremma occupies the northern part of the Tuscan Maremma, between the Etruscan Coast, the Val di Cecina, the Val di Cornia and the Metalliferous Hills. It is a diverse region, where the proximity of the Tyrrhenian Sea meets rolling hills, coastal plains and inland valleys, creating a marked variety of microclimates and wine-growing environments.
The climate is Mediterranean, sunny and breezy. Sea breezes accompany the ripening of the grapes, tempering summer temperatures and promoting a balance between sugar development, acidity and aromatic complexity. In the hilly areas, the greater temperature variations between day and night contribute to the definition of the aromas and the finesse of the fruit.
The geology is also particularly diverse. The vineyards are situated on marine and alluvial deposits, sandy and clayey soils, and terrain rich in pebbles, sandstone, marl and limestone components. This variety of substrates results in different responses from the vines, ranging from the greater structure of the deeper, clayier soils to the mineral tension and savoury character expressed by the stonier plots or those closer to the coast.
The grape varieties grown include Sangiovese, Vermentino, Trebbiano Toscano, Ansonica and Ciliegiolo, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon and Viognier. This yields fragrant and savoury whites, rosés with good freshness, dynamic and structured reds, as well as more complex and age-worthy wines born from the marriage of Tuscan and international varieties. The Bolgheri, Montescudaio and Val di Cornia appellations represent some of the region’s most recognisable expressions.
Viticulture makes the most of the different exposures and altitudes through carefully considered choices regarding planting, pruning, soil management and harvesting. In the winery, wines are frequently vinified separately by plot, with temperature-controlled fermentation and ageing in steel, concrete or wood, always with a view to preserving the terroir’s identity, balance and depth.
