In the Poggibonsi area, wine-growing takes place amongst the hills of the Upper Valdelsa, in a landscape characterised by a mix of vineyards, olive groves and woodland. The area forms part of the Chianti Colli Senesi appellation, in the northern part of the designation, alongside San Gimignano, Colle Val d’Elsa and Monteriggioni. The hillside vineyards, situated at an average altitude of around 300 metres, benefit from plenty of sunlight and a favourable slope configuration. The soils, of Pliocene origin, vary in composition, containing clay, sand and tuff – elements that contribute to giving the wines structure, balance and a distinctive terroir character.
Sangiovese is the principal grape variety and is complemented by Canaiolo Nero, Colorino and Ciliegiolo – traditional varieties that enrich the wine’s aromatic profile, colour and tannic structure. Local expressions are characterised by their freshness, savoury texture and gastronomic character, with styles including Chianti Colli Senesi and wines bearing the Tuscan geographical indication. Poggibonsi’s winemaking history is also linked to the railway, the historic wineries and the production of fiaschi. The tradition lives on in the ‘Pigio’ festival, dedicated to the grape harvest.
