Pomonte occupies the southern part of the Scansano area, in a hilly stretch of the Grosseto Maremma overlooking the Albegna valley. The landscape alternates between vineyards, olive groves and woodland, with a Mediterranean climate tempered by breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea and plenty of sunshine in summer. The dry conditions during the ripening season encourage the grapes to develop fully, whilst the daily temperature variations help to preserve their freshness and aromatic definition.
The soils in the area consist mainly of sandy substrates and hilly soils containing clay, coarse material and limestone components: a combination that promotes drainage, limits waterlogging and helps the vines develop balanced concentrations. Sangiovese is the main grape variety, alongside Ciliegiolo, Alicante, Canaiolo and a number of international varieties permitted in Maremma viticulture. These hills produce red wines reminiscent of Morellino di Scansano, alongside interpretations of the Tuscan Maremma, characterised by ripe fruit, a supple structure, well-integrated tannins and a pleasant savoury note. The local agricultural tradition, consolidated in the 20th century partly through co-operative efforts, is now combined with selective harvesting, temperature-controlled fermentation, ageing in concrete, steel or wood, and sustainable vineyard management practices.
