Castelnuovo dell’Abate is situated on the south-eastern hills of Montalcino, in the lower Val d’Orcia, at the foot of Monte Amiata and near the Abbey of Sant’Antimo. The vineyards are situated on slopes facing mainly south and south-east, at varying altitudes, and benefit from natural ventilation thanks to the open topography of the valley. The climate combines ample sunshine, dry summers and significant daily temperature variations, enhanced by cooler air currents from Monte Amiata and breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The geological landscape is varied: galestro, sandstone, quartzite, clay, silt and red soils rich in iron oxides alternate along the slopes, offering different conditions in terms of depth, drainage and water retention. Within this mosaic, Sangiovese finds one of its most recognisable expressions, capable of combining ripe fruit, a complex tannic structure, freshness and a distinct mineral character. The area is primarily associated with Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino, as well as wines from the Sant’Antimo appellation.
The winemaking tradition has its roots in the area’s monastic and medieval history. Today, vineyard management incorporates spurred cordon or Guyot pruning, hand-harvesting, grape selection, fermentation in stainless steel and prolonged ageing in oak barrels, all carried out with due respect for the individual plots.
