San Giustino Valdarno is situated on the southern slopes of Pratomagno, along the Setteponti corridor, in a hilly landscape characterised by woods, olive groves and watercourses. Viticulture benefits from a mild climate in winter and a cool one in summer, with significant daily temperature variations favoured by the proximity of the hills and the breezes from the Upper Valdarno. The vineyards are set within a complex geological context, formed from the ancient lacustrine sediments of the Valdarno basin: sands, clays and gravels, often rich in stone and well-drained, combine vigour with the ability to retain moisture, contributing to wines of balance, tension and depth.
Sangiovese is the region’s flagship variety, alongside Pugnitello, Colorino, Trebbiano Toscano, white and black Malvasia, as well as Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay. Rediscovered local varieties, such as Orpicchio, also feature. Training systems include Guyot and alberello, chosen according to the slopes and soil type. The region’s wines include structured, long-lived reds, fragrant rosés, savoury whites and dried-grape wines linked to the Vinsanto tradition. The winemaking history of the Valdarno, recognised as far back as the Grand Ducal decree of 1716, is revived today in the Valdarno di Sopra appellation and in a production approach focused on sustainability, biodiversity and the promotion of individual plots.
