Vallagarina occupies the southern part of Trentino, through which the Adige River flows, between Rovereto, the Isera hills and the hills that flank the valley towards Lake Garda and the Veneto plain. It is a diverse wine-growing region, where the valley floor, hillside terraces and higher slopes offer varying conditions in terms of aspect, altitude and soil composition.
The climate benefits from the protection of the mountain ranges and the breezes that sweep through the valley, promoting healthy grapes, temperature variations that aid ripening, and a gradual concentration of aromas. The vineyards feature poor, rocky soils, with a significant presence of basalt in the hills around Rovereto and Isera, alongside carbonate, limestone and dolomite deposits on the steeper slopes. This geological diversity helps to define wines with a distinct terroir character, capable of combining freshness, savouriness and structure.
The winemaking tradition of Vallagarina celebrates a rich heritage of grape varieties. Marzemino is one of the region’s defining varieties, particularly in the hills of Isera, where it produces elegant, fragrant reds characterised by floral and fruity aromas. Alongside this variety, Casetta and Enantio – historic red grape varieties – are also cultivated, as well as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Moscato Giallo and Bordeaux varieties, produced both as single-varietal wines and in blends.
The range includes white, rosé and red wines, including semi-sparkling varieties, alongside sparkling wines produced using the traditional method. In the vineyard, the traditional Trentino pergola system coexists with more modern training systems, chosen according to the slopes and altitude; in the cellar, vinification in stainless steel, ageing on the lees and maturation in oak allow the diverse character of the landscape to be expressed. The history of Marzemino, which is also linked to 18th-century musical culture, completes the picture of a region where viticulture, landscape and tradition have been in dialogue for centuries.
