Civitella del Lago overlooks the Corbara reservoir and the middle Tiber Valley from above, set amidst a hilly landscape where vineyards intermingle with woods, olive groves and hills shaped by the river’s course. The presence of the lake contributes to a favourable microclimate, with conditions that support the ripening of the grapes and preserve their balance and freshness. The soils in the area have a clay component, a factor that produces wines with good structure, intensity and a distinctive mineral character.
The territory falls within the Lago di Corbara appellation, which produces both white and red wines. Among the white grape varieties, Grechetto and Sauvignon stand out, produced as dry, passito and late-harvest wines; the red grapes include Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir, which produce fruity, enveloping wines that are also suited to longer ageing. Production is based on careful harvesting according to ripeness, separate vinification to enhance varietal characteristics, and carefully controlled ageing in stainless steel or oak. The recent history of the lake, formed by the dam on the Tiber in the 1960s, has helped to shape the landscape and wine-growing identity of Civitella del Lago.
