Valdobbiadene lies at the heart of the Treviso Pre-Alps, amidst a landscape of steep ridges, sun-facing slopes, woods and small vineyard plots. The vineyards generally lie at altitudes of between 100 and 500 metres, where the proximity of the Pre-Alps and the influence of the Adriatic Sea create a temperate, breezy climate characterised by significant daily temperature variations. These conditions favour the gradual ripening of the grapes and the preservation of their aromatic freshness.
The geology is varied: deep soils composed of conglomerates, sands, clays and ferrous components are found alongside soils of marine origin, with more permeable marl and sandstone. Glera is the main grape variety and, according to the production regulations, accounts for at least 85 per cent of the blend, alongside local varieties such as Verdiso, Bianchetta, Perera and Glera lunga.
The area’s flagship wine is Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, produced mainly as a sparkling wine through secondary fermentation in a pressure tank using the Martinotti method, alongside the frizzante, still, on-the-lees, Rive and Superiore di Cartizze varieties. Viticulture remains largely manual in nature, particularly on the ‘ciglioni’ – the grassy terraces that follow the slopes and bear witness to a long tradition of human adaptation to the land.
